Birth

The moment I was born

I smelt blood

So did not dare to cry

The silence

Startled my exhausted Mama

Who thought

I must have been born

Mute or dead

The silence is still here

And well preserved

I never dared tell Mama

That the moment I was born

I thought

She was dead

The Wound
In the sun
A wound opens my thought
I stray
Into the dazzling shadow of trees
My footsteps paddling
Against the flow of the unknown

The wound
Enlarges
Into a dried-up well
I turn off into a lane
Where I meet a stranger
Who raises a hand to hi
A familiar face
And a smile buds
On mine

The wound
Is two thousand years old
Yet always looks
Newly pricked open
Blood still dripping
Along the spear

I walk up home
See somebody there
Resembling the stranger
Or the acquaintance
Lift up the wound like a jar
And drink
Drenched like a soldier

I've just read the two poems and appreciate your efforts. They are impressive,  especially when taking into consideration that the writer is a non-native English speaker (I guess so).

Some modern techniques such as alienation are applied so well in these poems as in those western modern poets'. You also show a good language skill in both poems, except in the following line:

"So dared not cry"

I doubt it may be  mistaken for "So daring as not to cry", or "so daring that I didn't cry".

Anyway, they are good writings in spite of one or two minor defects.

A Game of Life

Every day I went into my dream
To dig a bit of a pit
Till one day I could recline within
Then every day
I began to cover myself a bit
With soil and sand
Till one day
I could only see a small hole of sky
And still a pair of hands was watched
To come every day
And cover a bit
No more
No less

Death is Two Inches from the Ground

Her two fingers
U-shaped squeezing before my eyes
Looked so forceful
As likely to narrow
A little bit more

Anyhow
Whenever your walking two feet
Fail to touch the ground
(She trod hers with a thud
Accordingly her hand flopped palm down
Onto the table
A muffled slap)

Then you became a shadow
Darkened windy hollow
Amplified there in the window
(Her thumb pointed beyond my shoulder
White foam flapped
At the corners of her mouth)

I was amazed by her metaphor
And subconsciously looked back
Saw a raven black
Standing there on the sill

Death is only a hair thin and away
She stressed painfully
From the ground
(Her hand abruptly shook into my sight
A hair magically appeared
Twiddled
Between her two fingers

我时常想着博尔赫斯这话:
"Dicen que soy un gran escritor. Agradezco esa curiosa opinión, pero no la comparto. El día de mañana, algunos lúcidos la refutarán fácilmente y me tildarán de impostor o chapucero o de ambas cosas a la vez."
都说我是个大作家。我对这个奇怪的想法心存感激,可是却不认同它。将来会有些智者轻松把它驳倒,给我安上一个骗子或者粗制滥造的标签或者两个同时安上。

呵呵,注意到楼主在日志里,已经把这一行改成了:“so did not dare to cry”,这是dare的正确用法。原来的“so dared not cry”是混淆了dare这个动词的两种用法。应该是无心之失。

Thanks for providing information on this topic.

I’m much relied on Michael Swan’s book “Practical English Usage” as a guide when I’m not sure about a particular usage of English, for it is broadly viewed as the most authoritative guide to modern English usage. My opinion about the usage of “dare” as shown above is based on my memory of the relative entries in this book, and I’m not sure it’s 100% correct. I’ll consult the book for the answer when I’m home.

Plus, following, for your reference, is a more detailed discussion on this same topic, which I’ve searched out on the internet:

Dare can be used in two ways:
1. as an ordinary verb (followed by the infinitive with TO)
In this case it is more common in negative sentences:
I didn't dare to tell her what had really happened.
My friends dared me to drink the entire glass all at once.

2. as a modal auxilary verb
This form is not very common though still exists.
The most common expression using this form is
'How DARE you? Take your hands off me at once!'

Remember that Dare is not common in an informal conversation.

please refer to point 2 in the discussion I quoted above. That point is exactly about the modal auxiliary usage of the verb.

是的,类似情态动词的用法。。。。
你说得对,M.斯旺在牛津英语用法指南里说现代英语不常用dare,而用not to afraid,或not to have the courage to 等替代。

Much thanks for quoting Michael Swan for me. Yes, that's in line with my memory.

So, both Michael Swan and the English learning webpage I quoted say "dare not" is not a common use in modern English. This is in line with my experience. I rarely, if not never, hear a native English speaker say: "I dared not tell you the news."

However, most Chinese compiled English dictionaries seem indifferent to how English is actually used in everyday life. That dictionary you quoted on #15 is just one example.

The poem Birth is taken from my poetry book Out of Chaos published in 1995. Before its publication in China, it was first proof-read by my colleague friend Greg Richter, an American professor of linguistics and  translator of Daode Jing, http://www2.truman.edu/~grichter/translations/ and then by my friend poets Professor Glen Phillips (Australian) and Professor David B. Axelrod (American) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_B._Axelrod.

Blessings to your interaction!
