The reunion
Feast in Maryland. The hang duck roasted in the open fire,
With ginger, lemon, and rosemary. The guest hacks off
The last of meat, gulping down her little cup of sake by
the left hand. Greased up to the elbows, her face smeared,
her heart blooming. The pleased hosts watch her
with surprise. When the day begins to cool,
she makes her way down to the campfire. Down from the festival energy
to the silence of her real life, she washes in cold water,
under the insistent night sky, happy and alone.
A future closes in, inch by inch, flesh by flesh
By the white linens on Westin bed and soiled sheets later
By the morning fix, by the afternoon tea, by the cable under the sea
The ghosts of her other world, crowding around
surrounding her with herself,
She sits down with pop songs from the radio, as night rise
from the summer grass, and the Atlantic darkens in the distance.
Flesh of the spirit, souls of the body, shuttle between boundaries of life,
Then reunite, like fire finds oxygen
