An Old Man
An old man has been sitting there in the shade of a big green camphor tree for all the afternoon.
In back of him, there is an ancient temple, much older than him, without doors and windows.
Inside of it, there is a sexless Bodhisattva looking at the view of the old man's back all the time.
The old man stands up and, with hands clasped behind back, strolls back to his home.
After a while, he slowly steps out again with his dog.
The dog is following him and wigwagging its tail,
Silently, they go across a golden setting-sun spread earth wall,
The old man goes out of the foot of a hill and staggering across a streamlet……
Slightly rising grief is the surrounding area of his wife's tomb.
The old man squats himself down and fishes out his tobacco pipe, keeps looking at the grass on the tomb.
The loyal dog is also squatting down, listening to the voice of the two persons.
The setting sun has sunk down, the old man stands up and to keep looking over the distant mountains.

How can the dog know about the brick pagoda there once built by the master of the distant mountains.
How can the dog hear the suona horn once blown by the sending party to escort the bride in the distant mountains.
The setting sun has gravitated to the bottom,
As the setting sun, the old man lights up the oil lamp in his room.
The autumn of 1983
老人
老人在大樟树的绿荫里坐了一个下午
身后是比他还年老的没有门窗的古寺
里面那个没有性别的菩萨一直看着他的背影
老人站了起来背着手踱回了家
过了一会儿又慢慢地走了出来带着那条狗
那条狗摇着尾巴跟随在他的身后
默默地走过那段被夕阳涂得橙黄的土墙
老人走出山脚趔趄地跨过一条小溪
微微隆起的悲哀是他老伴的坟地
老人蹲了下来掏出旱烟看着坟上的青草
那忠实的狗也蹲了下来它在听两个人的声音
夕阳沉下去了，老人站了起来向远山望着
夕阳沉下去了，狗也站了起来向远山望着
狗哪里知道远山里有主人建造过的砖塔
狗哪能听到远山里主人曾吹响过迎婚的唢呐
夕阳沉没了
夕阳一样的老人在屋里点起了油灯
